Sten Stands
Sten Stands
Your plant deserves better than a plastic saucer on the floor.
The Sten is four tapered legs in solid American black walnut, angled outward on all four sides at a deliberate splay that gives the stand a wide, stable footprint and a visual openness that most plant stands do not have. Two flat cross-rails connect the legs and cradle the pot — no platform, no solid shelf, nothing between the plant and the air around it. The design is as spare as furniture gets, and it is spare in the right way: every element present because it has to be, nothing added because it was easy to include.
Look at the legs up close. Each one is faceted — flat faces machined square, then tapered on the table saw from a full inch and a half down to a clean point at the foot. At certain angles the legs almost disappear. At others the walnut grain catches the light and the whole stand glows. This is the kind of detail you do not notice the first time you see the piece. You notice it a week after it is in your home, when the afternoon light hits it differently and you realize the stand has been doing something beautiful the whole time.
The cross-rails are mortised directly into the legs — no screws, no bolts, no knock-down hardware that loosens with use. Hand-fitted joints, gluded, and left to cure fully before the stand is finished. We test every joint by hand before assembly. If it rattles, it is remade. The Sten is built to hold a ten-pound pot for twenty years without movement.
We make the Sten in two heights to suit different rooms and different plants. The taller stand is designed for a statement plant — a monstera, a fiddle-leaf fig — something that wants to be seen from across the room. The shorter stand suits a trailing pothos, a small succulent collection, or a ceramic pot that deserves to be lifted off the floor without overpowering it. Both heights use the same leg profile and the same rail dimensions. Buy one of each and place them together — the pair is better than either one alone.
Finished with hard wax oil, hand-buffed between the final two. Walnut takes oil beautifully — the grain opens up and the color deepens to something that photographs well and looks even better in person. Every Sten is made from a different board. The stand you receive will have its own grain, its own figure, its own character. That is the point of solid wood.

A Note on Fit
The Sten cradles most standard nursery and decorative pots in the 8–10 inch range. The pot rests on the cross-rails, not a platform, so sizing is forgiving. If you have a specific pot in mind, send us the diameter before ordering and we will confirm the fit.
Care
Wipe with a dry cloth. Keep away from standing water. Refresh once a year with a small amount of danish oil if the wood looks dry. Walnut deepens and mellows with age — a stand you have owned for five years will have a patina that a new one cannot match.
